Tragically, day care deaths have been all over the news in Indiana recently.
DAY CARE DEATHS IN 2016
- Death of an 10-month old on April 6, 2016
- Death of a 1-year old on April 25, 2016
- Death of a 16-month old on August 8, 2016
THE SCARY FACTS
According to an investigation by the Indianapolis Star, there were 21 reported day care deaths in Indiana between 2009 and June 2013. As of March 9, 2014, 10 more deaths had been reported. See this article for more. Shockingly, 21 of those 31 deaths occurred at unlicensed or illegal day cares.
It may be very upsetting for you to learn this, but not all day cares in Indiana are required to be licensed. For many, this simply defies logic. But it is legal.
Remember, if a day care is unlicensed, it is likely not being inspected either.
Another shocking fact about day cares is that not all of them are insured.
RESEARCH YOUR DAY CARE
Children are precious blessings and gifts from God. As parents, our number one job is to protect and love our children. But figuring out how to best protect our children while we are at work can be a struggle for many parents.
If you do not have the ability to care for your children at home, then chances are, you will need to use a day care.
Did you know that the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) provides a wealth of information about child care providers? See this article for more.
From finding child care and local resources and referrals to child care assistance and provider regulations/standards and even inspection reports, the FSSA website is a go-to for parents.
